The surprise gem of the show so far has been Genki’s Blackjack DS. Following the adventures of the world’s greatest unlicensed surgeon, it’s an interactive manga presented in the same brisk, dynamic style of Inis’s Osu Tatakae Ouendan.

The interactive element of the game comes in the form of “targets” that have to be hit, in a very similar fashion to Ouendan, only now, some of the targets require strange zig zaggy motions to successfully hit them. Success in these, represent success on the operating table, which in turn affects the outcome of the interactive manga. You’re probably thinking how incredibly similar this all sounds to Ouendan, and it is, which is precisely what makes the game so fun. Just like its inspiration, you often find yourself torn between viewing the manga or merely focusing on the game mechanics of the operations.

One of Japan’s most famous manga, Blackjack was created by Osamu Tezuka, father of anime and creator of Astroboy. His adventures lead him all over the world, operating on the richest of the rich and the strangest of the strange. This certainly isn’t Trauma Centre: Under the Knife, indeed, the 2nd chapter of the game focuses on an operation on a werewolf in some creepy old mansion.
Information at the show reveals its one player only, and an exploration of the options menu reveals the existence of unlock-able mini-games and other extras. Released in November in Japan, we can only hope that it gets an English language version at some point.

I’ve been waiting for this game ever since the V-jump preview some months ago.
Astroboy will show up in one of the missions as well, thus it will be a must buy for me.
The gameplay just helps it out.

Looks interesting. It seems to be yet another quirky DS game. The Japanese developers are really tapping into some weird mojo these days.

Here’s the thing
The Black Jack manga nor the Black Jack anime(s) have never came stateside so, It’s possible that game will be import only

“the 2nd chapter of the game focuses on an operation on a werewolf in some creepy old mansion.”

so is it a rythm game or some kind of bizarre puzzler?
ALH - 09.23.06 3:44 am
Its neither, “Interactive manga” is probably the best description.
Jools - 09.23.06 4:15 am
I declare it a future Import Worthy!
Harukio - 09.23.06 8:23 am
So wait… interactive manga… does that mean that you get a “game over” if you fail like usual, or does it just take you down a different story path?

It’s weird because Gamepro was just writing about how a
Blackjack game would be cool on the DS a few months ago.

The thing is
Nobody’s airing the Black Jack anime here in the US, The Black Jack manga is not coming stateside
so, The DS game is import only!
Cyber Fox - 09.23.06 3:38 pm
The game appears to be a cross-over between Black Jack and Phoenix (Hinotori). Both are Tezuka works. The werewolf refered to is a character from one of the Hinotori mangas, which spans many ages, places and characters.

Viink, while the Blackjack movie from years back was licensed, the animated series has never been licensed or translated (unless there’s a fansub out there). This game appears to be based on Black Jack as he’s shown in the most recent animated series, which started in 2004 (and may still be running).

Cyber Fox:
The thing is
A game about lawyering was localized despite all odds, and turned out to be a decent hit.
So you never know. It probably won’t come out here, true, but it’s not the absolute you make it out to be.
Also, Viz ran the Blackjack manga in their Manga Vizion anthology for a while and published a few GNs… they haven’t reprinted them in the smaller format most are using now, though.
